Botswanan's president meets with SpaceX executives to restore service

Botswana's President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, reportedly met with SpaceX executives who expressed an interest to obtain a license that will enable the SpaceX company to operate in the country without any obstruction and breaching of Botswanan law.

Botswana is not the only country in which Starlink is not licenced. It is illegal in several countries, including Zimbabwe, Cameroon, and South Africa. The Zimbabwean telecom authority had ordered Starlink to disconnect its Zimbabwe subscribers; however, Starlink complied with the directive, notifying its users in the area by email.

President, Mokgweetsi Masisi during a business summit in the United States, met with the Internet provider's director of global licensing and activation to discuss on what it will take to get an operational license for Starlink to operate in the country.

Starlink's earlier application for a license in the country in February 2024 was rejected by the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) citing the company's failure to meet all requirements which led to the banning of the importation, use, and selling of Starlink kits or services within the country.

Starlink in April 2024, emailed its roaming customers, to inform them that by the end of April 2024, its services would be unavailable in regions where it had not yet been authorized. This would disconnect individuals and businesses in places like Botswana.
