Man dies after receiving a pig kidney transplant

A man aged 62 passed away following a groundbreaking medical procedure that marked him as the first person worldwide to undergo a live transplant of a genetically modified pig kidney.

Rick Slayman underwent the innovative surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in March subsequent to his diagnosis with end-stage kidney disease the preceding year. The medical institution stressed that there is no evidence linking his demise to the transplant.

Following a four-hour operation recommended by his medical team, Slayman, who held a managerial position at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, was discharged from the hospital in April. Medical experts expressed optimism that the newly transplanted kidney could potentially serve him for years, although they admitted to uncertainties surrounding animal-to-human transplant procedures.

Slayman, as previously stated in a release, had been under the care of the hospital's transplant program for 11 years. In 2018, he had received a kidney from a human donor after enduring years of diabetes and hypertension. However, signs of kidney failure emerged five years later, leading him to resume dialysis in 2023.
